Until this task is completed, you and your student will not be able to access Power School and you will not be able to use all the information that is made available there.

NBC home football games ARE NOT a drop-off event. Anyone in the Middle School or Elementary Schools attending a Northern Burlington home football game must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Eating on the Buses

A reminder that students may not eat while on the bus. While on the bus, all food should remain packed away in lunch boxes and/or packaging. We want to make sure our buses are neat and clean for the many runs they do each day for our school as well as the elementary schools.

Lost a Bus Item

If your child has lost an item on the bus, please have them check with the bus driver to see if they found it or call the transportation office so we can follow up with the driver. When calling, please have your student’s bus route number and a description of the item. You can also check with the school’s main office to see if transportation turned in the item. Parents should not go directly to the bus lot as that area is limited to transportation personnel only.

How many things can you worry about at once? Or in a day? A lot I bet! Worries are so convincing! However, in reality, according to a study by Cornell University, 85 percent of what we worry about never happens. And further, they found that in the 15 percent of cases where worries “came true,” 79 percent of people handled them better than they thought they would or learned something valuable from the experience. As adults, we are still trying to master this ability, so imagine adolescents, being newer at the job of balancing demands and worries, might really struggle with this especially at the start of a new school year!.

Making a decision NOT to believe the misfortune that your worried thoughts see in your future is the first step. Doing things to calm your brain is the second. One technique you can try on your own and/or teach is this: Press the center of your palm with your thumb like you are pressing a button. Breath in for 1 and think red. Breathe in for 2 and think blue. Breathe in for 3 and think green. On each exhale try to think of nothing for a moment. Spending 90 seconds to distract yourself away from the worry is believed to rewire your brain, interrupting the fight or flight response.

The other strategy to help battle worry is to practice leaving work and school behind. One strategy to try is to pick a landmark on your way home and imagine tossing a bag that is your day onto it. Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote this to his daughter: Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders, losses, and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; let today go so you can begin tomorrow well and serenely, with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense. Each new day is too dear, with its hopes and invitations, to waste a moment on yesterdays.” What good advice to give as a new school year begins.
