| | It is often said that communication is the key to a strong relationship. When I came across this article in the Wall Street Journal titled, “How to Become a “Supercommunicator”, I thought it would be worth sharing. The article discusses “super communicators”- “people capable of saying exactly the right thing, breaking through to almost anyone, figuring out how to connect in even the most unlikely circumstances.” While we might know people who this comes easy to, a lot of us have to work at this. The good news is there are definitely skills you can practice to improve. The earlier our students/children learn these skills it seems that their relationships might just be easier…and maybe we can try to model well for them in the meantime. The author Charles Duhigg mentions that there are three types of conversations: practical, emotional and social and that we have to try to match the type of conversation our companion is having in order to connect, Our brain craves connections so that is why it feels so good when we feel like we “click” with someone. So here are some of the tips he had to offer: Ask deep questions, such as going further such as trying to find the “why” of the reason they might like to go into the field of their choice after high school.. Prove you are listening. Ask a question about what you have heard and then rephrase it and ask if you “got it right”. It might seem like more work in the beginning but it really helps the person feel heard. Determine what everyone wants. Duhigg states that it’s important to remember that what the other person might want out of the conversation is important too. Pay attention to more than just words. Don’t ignore body language, sighs or laughs.
Lastly, he states, “Underlying this science is a big idea: Communication is a learnable skill. There are moments when a curious question, a silent laugh or an empathetic expression can carve a new path. We can all learn how to hear what’s unsaid and speak so others want to listen. Because the right conversation, at the right moment, can change everything.” | | Spring sports registration has been open for several weeks. If you already have an account, please log in with your username and password to register your student-athlete. If you are new to the system, please create an account and continue as a new user. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact the athletic office at moneill@nburlington.com or call 609-298-3900, ext. 2093.
Spring sports registration has been open since the beginning of January. We have reached the point where your child may not be cleared in time to participate in tryouts and initial practices if you have not already completed the registration process. Students who are not cleared to practice may not try out, and, as a result, may not make the team.
The different spring teams are beginning to hold their organizational meetings. If your child is interested, remind them to listen to the morning announcements for information on the meetings and to be sure to attend the appropriate one. | | Please see this FLIER from our transportation office. The district is looking for full and part time bus drivers. The job includes free training to earn CDL, as well as flexible hours. Feel free to share this flier with others who may be interested.
